Do’s and Don’ts for Postpartum Visitors

10/13/2024

Having a baby can be both exciting AND a challenging adjustment! The immediate postpartum period is a time of recovery for the birthing parent. It’s also a major life transition for the whole family.

This post contains do’s and don’ts for postpartum visitors.

If you are an expectant or new parent, consider sharing this with those that plan on visiting during the early postpartum period. It can help with establishing boundaries and setting expectations for family and friends who will be stopping by. This information can also be used to guide conversations in advance of any visits.

If you are someone who will be visiting a family during the early days of postpartum, realize that you are being welcomed at a very vulnerable and transformative time for the family. Following these do’s and don’ts are a great way to be supportive.

Do’s

  • Do reschedule your visit if you have a fever, cough, sore throat, exposure, etc.
  • Do wash your hands before touching the baby
  • Do wear a mask, if requested
  • Do offer to hold baby so new parent(s) can rest, shower, eat, etc.
  • Do give baby back upon request for feeding and care needs
  • Do bring take-out or an oven-ready meal
  • Do help out with tidying up, taking out trash, doing dishes, etc.

Don’ts

  • Don’t kiss the baby to help protect against illnesses like RSV
  • Don’t wear strong smells like perfume or smoke
  • Don’t assume new parent(s) can host or entertain visitors
  • Don’t give unsolicited advice
  • Don’t be offended if the family doesn’t answer calls or want visitors
  • Don’t be offended if you don’t get a chance to hold the babY
  • Don’t bring small children without an invitation

Thank you for being supportive during this special time and honoring the needs of the family.
